Written in 1956, this song was a rhythm and blues hit for Little Willie John that crossed over and became a pop standard after being transformed, with additional lyrics, by Peggy Lee and became her signature song. Peggy clearly expresses her passion for her man in a way she knows how. Al Green – Let’s Stay Together

On the 1972 album of the same name, it reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained on the chart for 16 weeks. It also topped Billboard’s R&B chart for nine weeks. The song later appeared on the soundtrack to Pulp Fiction. It was ranked the 60th greatest song of all time by Rolling Stone magazine on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Al knows he needs no other, it seems based on the title and lyrical hints he may have thought about leaving, but ultimately decided she’s what he needs and wants in his life. The reasons he thought he needed to break up did not exist. Al wants to be with his woman no matter what. “When times are good or bad, when happy or sad.” I think that sums up what love is.

Alicia Keys – Fallin

Written and produced by American singer-songwriter Alicia Keys for her debut album, Songs in A Minor (2001) it was released to radio and music video outlets in April 2001. It is generally considered her signature song. Fallin’ became Keys’ first number-one single in the United States and her first top five hit in several countries. The songwriting and production of Fallin’ is credited solely to Keys. The song’s lyrics find Keys lamenting on a relationship that fills her with confused and mixed feelings. Following the song’s a cappella intro, she proceeds to explain how her relationship with her man varies between happy times and painful conflict.

Sometimes loving someone hurts so much you don’t even know what to do. It can be an emotional rollercoaster. Up and down, back and forth, in and out; so much it just makes you sick. Alicia expresses it best here. Her emotional piano and vocals demonstrate the pain and pleasure of love that often exists between a couple who have had good and bad times. Not only does the ache and longing for her love come through, but she is just stunningly beautiful in this video. Her voice is simply amazing here.

Boyz II Men – I’ll Make Love To You

“I’ll Make Love to You” is a 1994 number-one hit single by R&B group Boyz II Men for the Motown label. The song, which was written by Babyface, was the lead single from their second album II. It was at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for 14 weeks, from August 27 to November 26, 1994. The song set a record for the most weeks at number one at the time (tied with Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” from late 1992 to early 1993). This record was later broken by “One Sweet Day”, a collaboration between Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey, which remained at #1 on the Hot 100 for 16 weeks. “I’ll Make Love to You” also topped the U.S. R&B and adult contemporary charts (respectively for nine and three weeks) in 1994, and the single went Top 5 in the United Kingdom.

A platinum-selling single, “I’ll Make Love to You” won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and two American Music Awards for Favorite Pop/Rock Single and Favorite Soul/R&B Single.

Sometimes we men can be a bit neglectful in our expressions of love. We can take it for granted and it can get lost in all the work and stress in our lives. This song is an emotional outreach to all men to remember to sometimes take it slow and rekindle the passion two people feel. Boyz II Men did a spectacular job of giving us one way to express love for another.

The music video features a woman and a man. The man, whose name is Dwayne, installs a security system in the woman’s house. She later invites him to have a drink, but he’s busy. It turns out that she really likes him, likewise as he likes her too. While reading the letter, he begins to slowly take off his clothes, right at the moment in the song where the lyrics say he should. In the end, he writes her a letter, she receives it and reads it: it is a love letter, with the song lyrics.

Throughout the video, Boyz II Men appear in two sets of white and beige clothes, white shorts and pastels over white muscle shirts, shorts and track jackets over t-shirts with green canvas shoes and no socks, dress pants and chest-bearing open dress shirts, colorful suits with muscle shirts underneath, all in different areas and landscapes.

“Kiss and Say Goodbye” – The Manhattans

“Kiss and Say Goodbye” is a song recorded by the American R&B vocal group The Manhattans. The song was written by Manhattans member Winfred “Blue” Lovett. The original demo of the song was recorded with The Manhattans backing band, “Little Harlem.” After hearing a tape of the recording, producer/arranger Bobby Martin decided to re-record the song with MFSB at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia. Released as a single, in both a version that included a mid-song rap spoken part (aimed toward the R&B market) and one that omitted it (aimed toward the pop market), over a year later, the song became a world-wide hit for the group, spending two weeks at number one on the U.S. Pop and U.S. R&B charts. and reaching number four on the UK Singles Chart in the summer of 1976. In the U.S., the song was the 400th #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart. It also became just the second single to earn double-platinum certification status (Johnnie Taylor‘s “Disco Lady” was the first a few months earlier). Hong Kong Pop Diva Anita Mui‘s rendition of this song, “Cherish When We Meet Again” (珍惜再會時), was the final song she performed before her death from Cervical Cancer in December 2003.

Skeeter Davis “The End Of The World”

“The End of the World” is a pop music hit song by Skeeter Davis that enjoyed international success in the 1960s. The record was released by RCA Records in December 1962 and reached its greatest success in March 1963, peaking at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart, number two on the Billboard country singles chart(Davis was a country music vocalist and the record was a crossover music success), and number one on Billboard’s easy listening chart. The record also was a number four hit on Billboard’s rhythm and blues chart, making Davis one of the very few Caucasian female vocalists to enjoy a top ten record on that chart. Davis’ four-chart top-ten accomplishment has never been duplicated by any other female vocalist in the history of the Billboard charts

Although Ruby & the Romantics’ hit “Our Day Will Come” kept “The End of the World” from hitting number one on the pop chart, the song’s popularity and chart history earned it the number three place on Billboard’s list of the year’s 20 biggest hits. The music was written by Arthur Kent with lyrics by Sylvia Dee. Dee also wrote the lyrics for “Too Young” by Nat King Cole. Davis’ recording was produced by Chet Atkins and has long been considered one of the foremost examples of the Nashville Sound of the 1960s – smooth vocals and a slick, sophisticated production appealing to audiences far beyond the traditional country music audience. The song was played at Atkins’ funeral in 2001 in an instrumental performance by Marty Stuart and later, Davis’ recording was broadcast over the speakers of her 2004 funeral at the Ryman Auditorium.

“It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday” – Boyz II Men

“It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday” is an R&B song written by Motown husband-and-wife songwriting team Freddie Perren and Christine Yarian for the 1975 film Cooley High. In the film, the song is performed by Motown artist G.C. Cameron, whose rendition peaked at number 38 on the Billboard R&B singles chart that same year. Perren also composed the instrumental score for Cooley High, and the B-side to “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday” features two of his score compositions from the film.

The composition fared better when covered in an a cappella rendition by contemporary R&B Motown group Boyz II Men 16 years later.
